In linguistics, there are many important classes to study about . One of the prominent parts is morphology. This
is the study of words. “morphology is the study of the internal structure of
words and is both the oldest and one of youngest subdisciplines of grammar” (Martin
Haspelmath, Andrea Sims, 2011). Tom Ritchey (2013) argues that “Morphology is
the study of form or pattern”. “morphology is the study of forms” (George Yule,2014).
According to the scholars’ views, it is crystal clear that the morphology is
the how a language structured in morphemes, which are a related structure of
words. I am writing here about the study of morphology helps the second
language learners of English to build up their skills.
Learners will be able to go on with
reading, comprehension, oral language and writing. In the study of morphology,
students can have understandings of more morphologically complex words, they
can get the words through learning each and every lesson in morphology in a
clear and perfect way. Via this, it is understandable this particular study
helps them to enhance their reading, comprehension, oral language and writing
skills.
For example: through the learning of lexical morphemes, the part of free
morphemes in morphology, they learn many new words from nouns (car. bus. boy,
girl), verbs (go, come, run, sleep), adjectives (beautiful, handsome), adverbs
(fast, hard). This lesson makes them have a big vocabulary.
Students who have a good
understanding by learning morphology are able to understand the meaning and the
spelling of the words. In morphology, they can learn many more words by heart
with the spelling and meaning by creating new words.
For example: the word “beauty” which is in the noun category can be created as
“beautiful” as an adjective, and the word “excellent”, the one under the
adjectives can be created as “excellence” as a noun. This is how the second
language learners of English create the new words with understanding the
spelling and meaning of them.
Second language learners of English
can get a clear understanding in the grammar part. By learning morphology,
students can not only create new forms of words but also, they can identify the
changes happen in the words.
For example: the word “shock” can come “shocked” as a past form, the word
“bus” can come “buses” as a plural form, the word “go” can be “goes” as a
present form of the verb and the word “near” will be “nearer or nearest” as a
comparative or superlative form of the adjective. These changes are called grammatical
changes or grammatical functions These kinds of changes would be very easy for
those who learn morphology to identify.
The study of morphology helps the L2
learners to break down the morphemes and understand the meanings and increase
their vocabulary. Students can easily understand the meanings and improve their
word power via the word formation which work on derivational morphology
(includes suffixes and prefixes).
For example: the words “foolish”,
“careful”, “careless” and “believable” are not the stem words. These words are
combined with suffixes which are “ish”, “ful”, “less” and “able” and for the words
“misuse”, “unnecessary” and “renew”, these are combined with prefixes. The L2
learners of English can figure out what the words combined with, and they can
produce new words in order to increase their vocabulary power, by learning
morphology very completely, also they could come to know how the meanings of
the words will be.
In conclusion. The results of
morphology are very clear that it helps the students to get prepared to move
onto the next level and get a perfect understanding in grammatical function and
increase their reading and writing skills. The impacts of morphology spread out
among all specifically, among the second language learners.
